Editors on nine partner films

I led

Toolkit design: the motion system

Decision I owned

Template for editors, not for designers

01

Context

Unity needed a video series animation toolkit for its editors: intro, outro, title card and question card. Nine videos, each focused on a different Unity partner, each needing its own character while staying inside Unity's brand guidelines.

02

The problem

  • 01Nine films that had to feel individual to each partner and identical as a series.
  • 02The people assembling episodes were editors, not motion designers, so anything that required animation skill would not survive contact with production.
  • 03Unity's brand guidelines had to hold across every one of them without a designer policing each cut.
03

What I did

01

Find the variable that carried the difference

Unity's offering was customised to each partner, so the partner's solution was the one thing that genuinely changed between films. That became the variable the system was designed around, rather than letting each film diverge freely.

02

Build an icon set as the differentiator

I designed nine icons, one per solution, and built them into the motion toolkit. Each film reads as its own thing because of the icon carrying through it, while every other element stays fixed.

03

Template for editors, not for designers

Intro, outro, title card and question card were built as toolkit pieces an editor could populate directly. Producing an episode became assembly rather than animation.

Result

  • 01Nine partner films produced from one toolkit, each distinct and all on brand.
  • 02Motion work moved out of the critical path: editors could finish episodes without waiting on a designer.
  • 03Assets that let the marketing and production teams collaborate without a handoff meeting per episode.
